Is reading a forgotten art?

Most of my questions have been answered by reading, but that’s just me I have always been able to “get lost” by picking up a book and reading. I really feel for people who have difficulties in reading. Where do they get their information from?

Some people will get all they thing they need every ten minutes in between the programs on television when the adverts appear, when some visually manipulative hypnotic brain washing technique is used creating an unfounded want and selling a high priced solution.

Years ago a trip to the library was an event when you had to stay quiet for some hours and just wander up and down rows of shelves with hundreds of books just checking out for something which would just leap out and grab your attention and say

“you need to read me”.

Books usually had hard covers on them and had the pages stitched and glued. The covers were textured leather with embossed writing on the cover. Inside there was writing giving information about the printers.

Most books are paperbacks printed in China on recycled paper. Even turning the pages doesn’t sound the same.

Books are still available from the high street bookshops and they are not all reading but have more pictures (used to be called plates). Of course the new books are good but years ago you borrowed books from the library and returned them, they were nurtured and respected by librarians, custodians of knowledge.

Now you are expected to buy books and make your own library, or are the books just read and thrown away?

Ok there are lots of books out there and everyone has a book in them, or so they say. There is a gift which good writers have and that is to keep a perfect stranger immersed in a topic or story. Also the reader has a choice to put down the book and pick it up again and restart where they left off or even flick back a few pages and remind themselves what had happened earlier.

Even if you want to find out the ending flick forward to the end to see “who dunit”, that’s a personal choice, not for me I respect the author too much and try to follow their theme or story line through to their conclusion.

After all it is the author’s story.

There are still some good publishers who give good deals to avid readers but it can be an expensive exercise buying books every week but some books are not always on the library shelves when you want to read them.
